How to throw your first discs

Brand new to the sport? Start here. Innova pro Nate Sexton walks you through your very first throws — then use the guides below to pick the right disc and learn the rest.

🥏 Choose the Right Disc

Four kinds of discs

Every disc is either a putter, midrange, fairway driver, or distance driver, sorted here by speed. Slower discs fly straighter and are more forgiving; faster discs add distance but take more arm speed to control.

Putter

  • Putting & short shots
  • The most accurate
  • Slow & predictable
  • The most control

Midrange

  • Straight flights
  • Approach shots
  • Easy to control
  • A must in every bag

Fairway Driver

  • More distance
  • Still controllable
  • Straighter than distance drivers
  • Accuracy off the tee

Distance Driver

  • Maximum distance
  • The fastest discs
  • Takes real arm speed
  • Hardest to control

⭐ Understanding Flight Numbers

What the four numbers mean

Every disc is printed with four numbers, like 6 · 5 · −2 · 1. Here's what they tell you (for a right-handed backhand throw).

Speed1–14

How fast you have to throw it. Low speed = easy to throw. Beginners fly low-speed discs much better.

Glide1–7

How long it floats in the air. More glide means more distance and easier throws.

Turn+1 to −5

How much it drifts right early in flight. More negative = easier to turn = friendlier for slower arms.

Fade0–5

How hard it hooks left at the end. Low fade finishes straight; high fade dependably curves back.
